Happy Earth Day!

I choose to celebrate by drinking beer in Mexico! It's not exactly going green gracefully, but it's a much needed break - back next week!

Flotsametrics.

Rubber Duckie
4 by 6 print, $8 at chicalookate

Did you know that there are huge floating patches of garbage in the oceans? Neither did I. There's one in the Pacific Ocean that's three times the size of Texas. I learned this while I was reading about flotsam. Which? Is totally fascinating.
Things have been falling in the ocean and washing up elsewhere for millions of years, obviously - but in 1992 a container of bathtub toys fell overboard in a storm and rubber ducks have been washing up all over the world ever since. For a while, First Years, Inc., the manufacturer of the toys, was offering a $100 savings bond for each rubber duck recovered. It's cute!
But only because ducks are cute. I probably wouldn't think it was so cute if it was toner cartridges washing up all over the place. Do you want to hear the story of the 61,000 Nike sneakers that are floating around out there? It's as captivating as it is disgusting....
You can read more about Flotsametrics here.

How lovely is that?

Hooray for Sarcasm!
tee, $15 at Typetees - this week, Typetees donates $1 per order to Plant A Billion Trees

Big dreams.

Last night, my six-year-old dreamed that he went to Peet's and had a cinnamon roll. And he was so happy. That's how I know I'm raising him right.

Going green gracefully.

We can't all be No Impact Man. Get a load of that guy here. For one year, he and his wife, their 2-year-old daughter, and their dog - in the middle of New York City - attempted to live without making any net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no carbon emissions, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no plastics, no air conditioning, no TV, no toilets…
But, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about going green gracefully. Making the easy changes first. Actually remembering to bring my travel mug to Peet's. Small steps in a positive direction. I'll keep you posted. And maybe one day I'll be brewing my own bio-diesel in the garage.
If you want a good laugh, read the comments at No Impact Man. It's truly amazing to me how violently defensive people get about the lifestyle choices of a complete stranger. Because it affects them, how?

Cosa Verde and Modish Earth Day Giveaway!

Who doesn't like free stuff? I don't know of anyone. And this is really good stuff too.
Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd and to celebrate, Cosa Verde and Modish have teamed up to bring you a special giveaway filled entirely with earth friendly goodies! You could win a MamaGoToMarket Bag, among other awesome things, so go check it out at Modish...
And since it's almost Earth day? I'm gonna be yapping about the environment a bunch - don't give me that look. I'll bring my usual level of snark and unorthodox grammar, so it should be just as mildly amusing as you've come to expect.

Fresh.

I'm learning to knit.

Yeah, yeah - I know. Knitting is So over. That's what I like about it.
Because I'm just not a bandwagon kinda gal. I have a hard time with things that are overly popular. Like blogging. And faux bois. And I probably won't be able to read Twilight until next year at the earliest.
Anyway, it's time to change colors on my little knitting project and I've been waiting days and days (17, to be exact) for new yarn to arrive in the mail. This is worse than waiting for a boy to call....

It's the economy, stupid.

I will be the first to tell you that I got a D in ECON 101. But since last November, I am hopelessly, perilously obsessed with economics. Give me a great discussion of Keynesian vs. Austrian School economic theory and I'm happy all day. I'm fascinated by the IMF, the FDIC, the LIBOR.
And? It worries me that I actually know what those letters stand for. It's no picnic, people. I don't want to spend my day thinking about trends in household debt. My friends do not want to hear any more about the Financial Accounting Standards Board.
Full immersion in the economic crisis is not at all comforting.
So, now I'm off to investigate the possible consequences of the uptick rule. It's a sickness.

I wish I was a forensic accountant.

I know, I know what you're thinking: forensic accounting can't possibly be as glamorous as it sounds. Oh, but how I long to go to work for the FDIC and take over an undercapitalized bank. Just a small one....

Confirmation that I am awesome: sosorosy

Don't get me wrong - I love me some good press. But this sosorosy feature is so good, I'm almost shy about it. Okay, I'm totally not shy about it, go read it. Every word is true!

This above all: to thine own self be true.

Of course, we must remember that Shakespeare delivered this blindingly beautiful piece of wisdom at the end of a long list of empty platitudes via an officious windbag, who would be accidentally murdered by Hamlet at the end of the third act.
Whatever. Take it for what it is.
It's that sort of attitude that allows me to think that The Matrix was all about believing in yourself.

Hello, April.

The new color palette is Pink and fresh as the first bloom in the garden, inspired by the month of April. In the shop right now!

Yeah, I locked myself out this morning.

But really? It couldn't have happened at a better time. Because it's a lovely day and because my kids were both at school, and thus I am able to keep up the oh-so-competent facade that I have going for them.
I'm sure that my handsome husband, who had to come home from work to let me in, did not find it so convenient....
